The Allegrini family has been making enchanting wines in Valpo- licella for more than a century, but their winery -- run by Marilisa Allegrini and her brother Franco -- is making some of its most formidable wines today. We love the balance of fabulous fruit and bright acidity of the Allegrini Amarones. There's nothing overdone about the wines and they always impress with their structure and drinkability. The super Veronese blend Palazzo della Torre is one of Italy's best-value wines. It's a blend mostly of corvina with rondinella and sangiovese. La Grola, which is mainly corvina with some oseleta, is also excellent value. Amarones are refined and harmonious, benchmarks for the region.
