Bodegas Palacios Remondo was originally founded in 1948, but it is under the direction and leadership of iconic winemaker Alvaro Palacios that the winery has really taken off and started to produce some of the most respected wines of the Rioja Oriental region.
Alvaro returned to his family bodega in 1999 having spent some time making a name for himself in the Priorat wine region of Spain. His return was on the condition that the future direction of the winery was up to him. As a result he immediately decreased wine production by 60% resulting in an increase in quality by a far higher factor.
Despite the ‘invasion’ of Tempranillo vine plantings everywhere in Rioja in the late 1980s, Alvaro stood firm in his belief in the use of the Garnacha grape, not least because he knew that the hotter, drier climate of Rioja Oriental was better suited to this variety. Consequently, current plantings at the bodega are 70% Garnacha and 30% Tempranillo but the proportion of Tempranillo is steadily decreasing.
The estate is certified organic and produces four wines, including the excellent Plácet white Rioja and the flagship red Propiedad.
