Along with Siepi, this vineyard which extends around the hamlet of Fonterutoli, 5km south of Castellina in Chianti, is the historic heart of Mazzei wine production.
Planted with Sangiovese vines plus smaller lots of Merlot, Malvasia Nera and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 30-hectare (74-acre) vineyard ranges in altitude from 350 meters (1148ft) to 560 metres (1837ft). The terrain consists of medium to steep slopes of Alberese marl, rich in limestone and skeleton but retaining little water. Vines are planted at a density of between 5800 and 7500 per hectare using guyot and spurred cordon training systems.
The perfect rapport between this medium-to-high hilly territory and the warmth rising off the Val d'Elsa which the vineyard overlooks, guarantees a special microclimate. Combined with the considerable diurnal temperature range generated by the surrounding woods, this creates the ideal conditions for elegant wines of extraordinary aroma, structure and complexity.
