Meffre family - When the grandfather of Julien Meffre, now one of the co-owners of Château du Glana, had the opportunity to acquire a few plots from Cru Classé Château Lagrange in 1961, he did not hesitate in seizing it. What started off with five hectares of top-quality vineyards in Saint-Julien has now grown to no less than 60 hectares. Du Glana is the biggest non-classified estate in the world-famous Saint-Julien appellation. The vineyards are in one continuous area of a clay and gravel plateau, where they are surrounded by such illustrious neighbours as Château Lagrange and Château Ducru-Beaucaillou. The Meffres are not ancestrally a Bordeaux winegrowing family. They come from the southern part of the Rhone valley, from Beaumes-de-Venise, where they run an estate named Château Les Applanats. 40-year-old Julien Meffre runs du Glana with his brother Ludovic, two years his elder. We live full-time in Bordeaux these days and put all our energies into du Glana. It has not taken long for their dedication to pay dividends for du Glana’s quality. Today the fruity, dense, classy and exquisitely crafted du Glana is one of the few unclassified wines that need not shy away from comparison with its classified neighbours. Open, red berry and flower aromas, finely chiselled tannin on the palate, pure dense fruit and a pleasant creaminess. Elegant and aroma-packed.
