95 points Wine Spectator - "Juicy in feel, with a compact, well-built core of blackberry, black currant and plum paste flavors, infused liberally with licorice snap and apple wood notes. A tarry hint underscores the finish, though the fruit stays dominant and driven throughout. Since the mid-2000s, Domaine Giraud, led by brother-and-sister team François and Marie Giraud, has steadily risen to be among Châteauneuf’s elite producers. The wines are sourced from the lieu-dit of the same name, located in the southern part of the appellation. This lieu-dit is comprised of deep, red clay soils with large stones on the surface, where the Girauds have some 100-year-old Grenache vines that form the base for this cuvée (there’s also 10% Syrah in the wine)"

93 points Wine Advocate

"More tightly coiled than last year, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes now seems more herbal than floral, with greenish streaks running through the crisp red berry fruit. A 90-10 blend of Grenache and Syrah from the lieu-dit les Gallimardes, the Syrah spent a year in new oak, while the Grenache aged in tank. It's full-bodied yet taut and racy, but it should relax in a couple of years and then drink well for at least a decade."

Domaine Giraud

The estate was born in 1974 when Pierre and Mireille Giraud decided to change careers from the distillery business to growers and wine makers. The Giraud family started off by renting 4 hectares of land. The Giraud family were familiar with Chateauneuf du Pape and wine making because they are related to the Armenier family, the owners of Domaine de Marcoux.

Brilliant oenologist, Philippe Cambie, has completely resurrected this estate, where he is now turning out some of the most extraordinary wines of the appellation, with the old vine Les Grenaches de Pierre an outstanding clone of Rayas. That's not surprising in view of the fact that it comes from the pure sandy soils near Rayas. With the 2011 vintage, Domaine Giraud was certified as a biodynamic estate as they only use 100% biodynamic vineyard techniques. Philippe Cambie consults the domaine.
