Product details

Penfolds Bin 2 was first released in 1960, but was discontinued during the 1970s at the height of the white wine boom. The original Bin 2 was an 'Australian Burgundy' style (despite its Rhone varieties) - typically a soft, medium-bodied wine based on Shiraz.

The Bin 2 blend of Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvedre) is relatively uncommon in Australian table wines. Also known as Mataro or Monastrell, Mourvèdre was introduced to Australia in the 1830s. Sometimes used in fortified wine production, this grape is widely planted in the Barossa Valley. It is greatly valued by winemakers for its blending attributes, adding complexity and palate grip. Interest in Bin 2 has grown as the popularity of traditional Rhone varieties and blends continues to flourish.

Mourvèdre, also known as mataro, was introduced to Australia during the 1830s. While extensively planted in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Bandol in France, it is believed to have originated Made from either Mataro in Catalonia, or Murviedro near Valencia, Spain.

Mourvèdre is dark in colour, smells of Provençal herbs and spices and has plenty of tannin stuffing. This is a wine varietal greatly valued by Penfolds winemakers for its blending attributes; toning down the exuberant qualities of shiraz, while adding overall complexity and palate grip.

The contemporary Bin 2 style is based on warmer vineyard sites like the Barossa Valley and is aged in older oak to emphasise just how well the spicy savouriness of mourvèdre complements the plush richness of shiraz.
